POSITION SUMMARY

Color Of Change—the nation’s largest online racial justice organization—is seeking a Chief Operating Officer (COO) to lead and optimize internal operations across our nonprofit and political entities (501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and PAC). This executive role keeps the engine running, ensuring our systems, people, and resources power the bold impact we’re known for.


CORE RESPONSIBILITIES 

Daily Operations & People Management (35%)

  • Oversee internal ops including HR, IT, administration, and facilities
  • Manage and coach leaders across finance, HR, project management, and operations
  • Lead weekly operations huddles and team retreats to align strategy and execution
  • Strengthen organizational culture grounded in equity, clarity, and collaboration

Financial Oversight & Compliance (20%)

  • Own the budget process, grant reporting, audits, and filings across all entities
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and internal controls for nonprofit and PAC operations
  • Monitor risk and lead policy updates to protect the organization’s integrity

Strategic Alignment & Performance (15%)

  • Help drive annual planning and organization-wide goal setting
  • Track operational KPIs and performance benchmarks
  • Collaborate with exec leadership to align operations with big-picture strategy

Tech & Systems (10%)

  • Oversee implementation and upkeep of secure, user-friendly digital tools
  • Make sure staff have the tech and systems they need to thrive in a remote workplace

Risk, Legal & Labor (15%)

  • Lead union strategy and negotiations with internal stakeholders
  • Ensure compliance with data privacy, liability coverage, and physical security
  • Coordinate with legal counsel to manage contracts and legal exposure

Executive Partnership (5%)

  • Advise and support the President/ED on operational strategy and special initiatives
  • Represent Color of Change externally when needed

Location:  New York is preferred, but remote eligible (U.S.-based)

FLSA Status:  Exempt

Reporting Structure: This role reports to the President/ED

COMPENSATION 

The salary for the role of the Chief Operating Officer is $185k +.  This is a full-time, exempt position. Color Of Change also offers a competitive benefits package. 

TRAVEL
Up to 25% (mostly U.S.)

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Working at Color Of Change (COC), you should be prepared to work remotely and/or in the assigned office location when hired. This position requires working core hours, Monday - Friday, on a laptop for most of the work day and additional time as required by job duties. We are not offering U.S. visa sponsorship for this role.
